Our Story
In 2024, Kiara Tanta-Quidgeon (SHC Founder, President/CEO) was honored with the United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) 25 Under 25 Leadership Award with a platform to foster healing through cultural connectedness. To build upon and amplify her platform, she established the Sunrise Healing Community Inc. (SHC). What started as an online community has grown into a non-profit organization that is run by Indigenous youth, for Indigenous youth.
Mission, Vision, Values
Our mission is to empower Indigenous youth (ages 14-30) to foster healing through cultural connectedness and revitalization. We envision a future where all Indigenous youth have the tools they need to heal, lead, and thrive–where youth are empowered to connect with their cultures, communities, and the land without shame or fear. Our values are as follows:
-
Youth Empowerment: We believe that all Indigenous youth are powerful agents of change and deserve spaces that nurture their healing, growth, and leadership.
-
Culture = Medicine: We believe that cultural connectedness is a powerful source of healing. Engaging with and revitalizing language, traditions, stories, ceremonies, and other elements of our cultures nurtures our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.
-
Community = Healing: We believe healing is nurtured in connection. Intergenerational relationships and collective action create supportive spaces where youth can thrive.
-
Protecting Mother Earth = Protecting Our Communities: We believe the health of the land, water, and air is deeply tied to the health of our Peoples. Caring for Mother Earth is an act of love, responsibility, and protection for future generations.
-
Accountability and Respect: Our work is guided by humility, transparency, and deep respect for Indigenous community wisdom and direction.
-
Sovereignty and Self-Determination: We uphold the inherent right of Indigenous Peoples—and especially youth—to define and lead their own healing journeys.
What We Offer
We share culturally-grounded healing resources, connect youth to educational and leadership opportunities, and host engaging and impactful workshops. Through both hosting and attending community events online, in Connecticut, New England, and beyond, we aim to create spaces (physical and virtual) where Indigenous youth can foster healing through cultural engagement, share their stories, connect with peers and mentors, and be unapologetically Indigenous.
